Becky Edwards was re-elected for a second term as a member of the Utah State House of Representatives in District 20.

Becky successfully overcame her challenger DJ Schanz with a final figure of 43 to 57.

The thing I hate about primaries is that the best two candidates are pitted against each other and when that happens a little mud begins to be slung back and forth blemishing both candidates.

The other thing I hate is being forced to choose between two good people and in this case both are personal friends.

I have made it clear from the beginning that I like both DJ and Becky and whoever wins will get my full support in the general election.

Primaries can cause hard feelings as people are forced to make a choice. Now we all need to come together and support Becky as our candidate against the Democrat challenger. She deserves our support.

DJ thanks for caring enough about your community and state to take a stand. Whenever an elected official has a challenger it causes them to rethink who they are what they believe and how well they truly serve their constituents. I believe that this race will make Becky a better representative and she has my support as she works through the issues in the upcoming term.

I encourage each of you to get involved in your community and state; discover the issues that will impact you, your family and your way of life. I understand that it is difficult as an elected representative to listen to the issues, the pro’s and con's and then to have to make a vote based on what you hear. Sometimes votes are cast for or against an issue based on the passion of those who either support or oppose it. This means that the right vote is not always cast. For this reason I believe that it is important that we all learn the issues and contact Becky and let her know how we believe. This makes it easier for her to truly represent her district.

I know that Becky is thoughtful and committed to vote according to what she thinks is best. And I know that she welcomes your opinion. Again, congratulations to Becky Edwards. Now lets' do our part as Republicans and vote for her in the general election in November!

I have seen too many issues where both sides are passionate about their positions. I make decisions based what I believe is best for the citizens I represent. All the citizens, not just the loud ones. (Don't anyone take offence, I am not referring to any specific individuals or groups. It was just a general observation.) “

  2. Thanks for your comment John.

John we are all human and sometimes we make poor choices on what appears to be right at the time. None of us are perfect.

Just because you make decisions that "you" believe are best for the citizens doesn't mean you are immune from making a mistake. I surely don't claim to be free from mistakes.

I have many friends who are public officials and from time to time they have told me about mistakes they made because they voted with their "heart" and not their head. And that usually resulted from hearing a good presentation with limited or not all the facts when a vote was required.

I call these passionate votes. This does not mean a person or even a legislator cannot be passionate it simply means that we are all subject to poor decisions every now and then, even our elected officials.

  3. Phill I have really enjoyed your blogs. I have many friends who have also enjoyed reading you posts. You do make us think. We even talked about some of your posts at our book club.

Quite a few of us are hoping that you run for City Council again. Why not run for mayor? I took a poll of 28 friends of mine in Bountiful and North Salt Lake and you would have beat Becky in the election with about 98% of the votes if you had run for the Representative seat. This even included two of my very liberal friends. Think about running again. We need people like you!

  4. Susie,

    Thanks for your comments.

Politics is a rough and tumble business. It takes a lot of time, money and tough skin. It surely isn't for everybody. Some don't have the time, others the money and most, the tough skin.

As I watched DJ and Becky working so hard on their campaigns and I heard and read of all of the shots they both took from their antagonists it made me appreciate their dedication but it did not get me excited about jumping into the political arena.

Although I am flattered by the results of your poll, I don't have any plans to run for any office anytime soon. We'll see what the future brings.

  5. Phill I voted for you the last time you ran for Bountiful City Council and I was shocked that you did not make it. How in the H--- did that old doofus Tom Tolman get re-elected again? I went to two city meetings and he fell asleep both times! You are smart and articulate and I hope you run again. I agree with Susie, we need people like you even right here in Bountiful! There a many of us out here ready to vote you in the next time you run!
