Can Obama be re-elected in 2012?

A recent poll in the New York Times states: “Nation’s Mood at Lowest Level in Two Years.” The poll suggested that things are not getting better for President Obama—they are getting much worse! 70% of American’s believe that the country is on the wrong track. Is this a surprise to anyone? We have record unemployment hovering around 9%--that is what the government tells you but the real numbers are between 17-20% and gas prices hovering around $4.85 a gallon. A friend of mine who lives in Hawaii pays $5.27 per gallon.

Oil is used in EVERYTHING in our lives. It is not just our fuel but in all of our textiles, machinery and mass transportation like trains, shipping trucks and airplanes. When the cost of oil goes up the cost of everything goes up! Wal-Mart, McDonald's and Kimberly-Clark all warn of looming inflation. Is there any wonder that 70% of American’s think the country is on the wrong track?

80% believe the national economy is bad and 57% do not approve of the way Obama is handling the economy. Another shocker! I am amazed that there are still Obama supporters out there.

46% disapprove of the way he is handling Foreign policy. 53% do not believe that Obama has the same priorities as they do. At his inauguration 65% believed he shared their priorities. Yet with this poll and overwhelming public distaste for Obama there are still those who think he is a shoe in for re-election. You’ve probably heard it said lately that Obama’s dismal mess of American economic and foreign policy has also created the happiest American in the country, Jimmy Carter because he will no longer go down as the worst president in American history!

Speaking of Jimmy Carter all of the pundits and polls suggested that he would win reelection against the unknown challenger Ronald Reagan without a problem. But on election night Reagan beat Carter with the biggest landslide in history. In fact, it was such a blow out that Carter conceded the election to Ronald Reagan before California, Oregon and Washington’s polls had closed. President Carter was a disaster in the SAME areas as Obama. Inflation was in double digits, unemployment was sky high, mortgage interest rates were as high as 18% and the Middle East was a mess including Iran taking American hostages. Does any of this sound familiar? Fortunately there hasn’t been an American taken hostage (yet) but everything is leading in the same direction as Carter with the potential to be MUCH worse.

Does it look like things can turn around fast enough for Obama to be re-elected? Nope! IN fact, there are many hopeful Democrats circling the wagons for a potential bid against Obama. It seems like the Republican’s have the opportunity to crush Obama in a re-election. A Republican can take back the White House assuming that we have a candidate that can walk and talk at the same time (that is about all he/she will have to do). And that candidate will only have to ask three similar questions like Reagan asked when he ran against Carter: “Are you better off now then you were four years ago?” “Is America still respected throughout the world?” and “Is there more or less employment opportunity than there was four years ago?”

In 2008 Obama used the slogan “HOPE in 2008.” The new slogan for 2012 may be “NOPE in 2012.”

  1. At last night's annual White House Correspondents Association dinner Seth Meyers joked that Obama 2008 would easily beat the current Obama in the next election. Court jesters can say the truth and get away with it.
